Face Shape Guide

The easiest way to determine your face shape is to outline your face with a pencil or marker onto a large sheet of paper. Or what I like to do, is to trace my face against a mirror with a dry erase marker (No, it doesn’t ruin the mirror, in fact, it wipes right off). Don’t panic if it looks a little large, you’re tracing your face to determine facial proportions.

PEAR SHAPED FACE

A wide chin and a narrow forehead.

Bette Midler and Kelly Osbourne have this face shape.

Goal: to Narrow the chin and widen the forehead.

The goal is to draw attention to the upper part of the face. A fully layered wig with height at the crown of the head (aka “shaggy” style) is a good look. A shorter wig with a wedge cut that hits above the jaw line is also a good selection.

Avoid Styles:  that are wide and full at the chin, these styles will emphasize the width of the jaw line.

OVAL SHAPED FACE

Only slightly narrower at the jaw line than at the temples, with a gently rounded hairline.

Grace Kelly, Rihanna and Marilyn Monroe have this face shape.

Goal: Your face shape is well "balanced”; even proportion. You will look best when you style your hair off your face.

Oval is considered by many to be the ideal and most versatile face shape, since nearly every style looks great on this facial shape. Hair pulled back or worn in an up do shows off the oval face the most. In long styles, a great classic look is a center or side part with hair touching shoulders. Try short layered looks with curls or a close extended nape.

ROUND SHAPED FACE

This shape is round and full at the cheeks; characterized by more of the face near the ears and gradually less curving upward and downward.

Queen Latifah, Audrey Hepburn and Oprah have this face shape.

Goal: to slim your face.

A round face should feel free to go long; a wig that ends right at the chin line will make the face look even more round! Hair below the chin line should be worn with a face-lengthening center part. For hair above chin line, wear an off-center part to offset the roundness. Height at the crown with bare forehead slim the face. Though bangs shorten the face, you can wear curly, tousled bangs or a soft wispy fringe. Try wearing longer styles closer to the face to give length.

Avoid styles: that are short and sleeked-back hairstyles; and avoid middle parts and straight bangs; keep hair straight, lengthy, straight on the sides and full on top.

RECTANGULAR/Oblong

Longer than it is wide; your face is long and slender, with your forehead and below cheeks about the same width.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Iman and Brooke Shields have this face shape.

Goal: Balance the width of the face with the length.

Hair styles that balance out the length of your face work best. Try short to medium lengths. Look for fullness at the sides and soft wispy bangs. This will shorten the length and add width to your face. Also, try a layered wig with a side part or one with bangs. Look for wigs that are flat at the crown, this adds softness to the straight lines of your face.

Avoid Styles: that are too long! This will only lengthen your face. Too much height will also lengthen your face.

SQUARE SHAPED FACE

An angular jaw and square brow, with jaw and brow being nearly the same width.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Eva Pigford have this face shape.

Goal: to soften the sharp angle of jaw line and minimize squared-off brow.

Hairstyles that emphasize the cheekbones mid-line of the face are most flattering.  To soften a square face, try wispy bangs and flowing layers. Look for wigs that are layered, curly or wavy. Long hair is also good for this face shape; it creates the illusion of length. Wear your best styles with hair swinging forward onto the face to reduce the angles.  For shorter styles try wearing your hair length approximately 1-1/2" below the chin, or extending to shoulder length to reduce and soften the appearance of your jaw. Hair worn on the forehead is always perfect for you, as long as it is wispy or fringed. Hair curled under will also narrow the width of the jaw.

Avoid styles: with blunt bangs, straight bobs and center parts, as they will emphasize your square jaw

HEART SHAPED FACE

A triangular-shaped face. This face is narrow at the jaw line, wider at the eye line, cheekbones and even more at the brow line.

Reese Witherspoon and Faith Hill have this face shape.

Goal: to diminish forehead width and create the appearance of a wider, fuller jaw.

A heart shaped face has a wide forehead and a smaller chin. The preferred wig for this face shape is one that makes the forehead look more narrow and the chin look wider. A wig with fullness near the chin, wavy curls (Wanda’s favorite), a chin length bob, or a wig with bangs, looks great with this face shape. Soft bangs flatter this shape, whether curly or smooth. Try wearing a side part with soft three-quarter bangs swept over one side to balance your forehead width.  But perhaps the best look is a medium length to mid-neck. Try our soft layered bob styles.

Avoid Styles: that emphasize the upper face without balancing out your narrow chin. Too much height at the crown and tapered necklines can make you look top heavy.
